Gîtes de France is an association founded on a mission of general interest: to safeguard the rural economy and support those who make their living from it by developing home-stay tourism.

Gîtes de France has a 65-year history in rural tourism.

1955: The Fédération Nationale des Gîtes de France was founded following the opening of France’s first rural gîte in the Basses-Alpes department

1969: The ‘épi’ becomes the emblem

1983: Launch of the first national Gîtes de France guide

1998: Launch of the national website www.gites-de-france.com

2007: Creation of the Ecogîte

2019: Launch of the Gîtes de France Initiatives endowment fund
