Founded in 1101, and located on the borders of Anjou, Poitou and Touraine, 16 km from Saumur, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is the largest Renaissance-style monastic complex preserved in France. It is also home to a new Musueacute;e régional d’art moderne presenting a collection of nearly 900 inéuvres. Named after the Plantagenêt dynasty, and later the Royal Abbey, it was also used as a prison from 1804 to 1963. When visiting the Abbey, don't miss the Romanesque kitchen, the recumbent figures of the Plantagenêt kings, the cloître as well as the large dormitory.
